A good night’s offers more than just a warm and fuzzy feeling in the first five minutes of waking; it can also improve your health and overall sense of wellbeing.
Sleep’s nothing special right? It’s just something we have to do at the end of every day to recharge our batteries ready for the next set of events to face. That’s the common belief, but have a conversation with someone suffering with a bout of insomnia and you might start to realise just how crucial sleep is to our wellbeing. Without it we feel irritable, on edge and, after a while, we can even feel our health suffering.
Not only can a great night’s sleep make you feel wonderful (there’s nothing like that contented feeling after a lazy morning lie in), but it can also have significant health benefits such as strengthening our ability to fight infections, reducing stress, and even controlling our appetites. Suddenly sleep is starting to sound a lot more important!
Sleep experts inform us that, as adults, we should get between seven and nine hours of kip a night, though obviously that varies from person to person. Some lucky souls only ever need four to six hours to feel completely refreshed, while others require something closer to ten hours before they can achieve the same result. You are likely to have a rough idea of what works for you, but if you do find yourself struggling to keep your eyes open in that afternoon lull each day, it may be that you need to fall into your bed a little earlier at night.
A large part of getting the most out of your sleep stems from implementing a good routine. Get used to an afternoon nap and you might find yourself struggling to sleep at night. Get used to waking up early and your body will naturally adjust, waking you up at that time even when the alarm clock isn’t shouting at you!
