Marketing – The Happiness Delusion
Every day we are bombarded with advertising, on the TV, on the radio, in magazines, on every tin of food, on every box of breakfast cereal, on every hair care product, in fact on everything we see and touch. It’s all designed to make you feel that you need to change to something newer, better, faster, healthier, prettier, longer lasting, brighter and the list goes on. It is designed to make you feel unhappy, you don’t have the latest best fastest prettiest healthiest product, you’re not worth it, you’re buying all the wrong things, you’re not spending enough money on the “right” things.
How can we ever be happy with this constant deluge of marketing? Well it’s a tough call but unless you detach yourself for a moment I would say you’ll struggle.
Wouldn’t it be great if a marketing message said “you’re great as you are”, “you’re really doing the best you can on a limited budget”, “you’ve taken care of your stuff and made it last longer”, “you really are special in so many ways”, “you deserve to be happy each and every day”….
If you can, take ownership of the marketing message and turn it into something that works for you and ignore the nonsense that is only meant to make you feel bad about yourself. Yes it’s hidden in the “you’ll feel great if you buy this” which of course contain the hidden message “you’ll feel terrible if you don’t”.
Feel better today by ignoring as much marketing as possible
